Alexander McQueen's Final Collection

The final collection (Autumn/Winter 2010) of mastermind and creative genius Alexander McQueen was shown this morning in Paris, in the guilded salon at the headquarters of luxury heavyweight Francois Pinault.

The collection featured 16 pieces, inspired by Byzantine art and the paintings of the Old Masters. According to WWD, McQueen digitally captured complete works of art and "weaved" them into his fabrics to create these mysterious, spiritual pieces.

The atmosphere at the show was somber, with models walking slowly down the runway.

From WWD:
"With a haunting soundtrack of operatic music, the presentation was solemn, funereal and even a little spooky — and the references to angels, broken skulls and religious themes eerily prescient. Tears were welling in the eyes of some spectators as the finale dress entered: a grand coat of gold feathers that ended in a froth of embroidered tulle."

In typical McQueen style, the pieces were beautiful, haunting, unique and ahead of the curve. His creativity in juxtaposing centuries-old art with digital technology and forward-think cuts and shapes is something that will surely not be seen again any time soon. I believe that if this collection shows us anything, it is that we have truly lost one of the brightest stars in the industry.
